Clemson Rowing to Compete at San Diego Crew Classic This Weekend

March 30, 2007

Clemson, SC – The Tiger rowing team will field three boats this weekend at the prestigious San Diego Crew Classic. This will be the 34th regatta and will be held at Crown Point Shores Park at Mission Bay. Clemson’s varsity 8+, second varsity 8+, and novice 8+ will be competing this weekend.

The varsity 8+ boat comes into the weekend with a #12 national ranking according to the U.S. Rowing/CRCA poll. It marks the highest ranking in school history. Clemson’s varsity 8+ is coming off a week in which it defeated three nationally-ranked programs (Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame) and was subsequently named ACC Crew of the Week.

The group will compete in the second heat of the Jessop-Whittier Cup (collegiate varsity 8+). If the Tigers finish in the top three of their heat, Clemson will advance to the grand final on Sunday at 11:35 AM. The Tigers will compete against Loyola, Oregon State, Southern Cal, and UCLA in the second heat Saturday at 8:50 AM.

The second varsity 8+ will compete for the Jackie Ann Stitt Hungness Trophy, beginning Saturday with the second heat that will feature seven boats. Clemson will compete with Chapman, Loyola, San Diego State, Stanford, UCLA, and Washington State at 10:00 AM. The grand final for the second varsity 8+ will be held Sunday at 10:40 AM and the petite final is set for 8:50 AM.

The novice 8+ crew will compete for the Laurel V. Korholz Perpetual Trophy, beginning Saturday with the first of three heats at 10:50 AM. The Tigers will face Arizona State, Colorado, Oregon State, and Washington State, among others, in their heat. Should the Tigers advance to the grand final, it will take place Sunday at 9:45 AM.
