CLEMSON, SC – The Clemson women’s rowing team swept Northeastern Saturday morning on Lake Hartwell. The Tigers took first in all four races against the Huskies on a perfect day in Clemson.

“I was really impressed with our team today,” said Clemson Head Coach Robbie Tenenbaum. “Northeastern is a strong program and we were able to come away with wins in all four races this morning.”

The first race of the day, the 1st Varsity 8, was a close race all the way to the finish. The Tigers took a lead that they held on to until the end, although the Huskies kept in contact with Clemson’s boat all the way down the course. The Tigers took first with a time of 6:46.63, while the Huskies finished a close second with a time of 6:50.68.

“The 1st Varsity 8 had a great battle for the first thousand meters, then they were able to pull away from Northeastern for just over a length victory,” said Tenenbaum. “They showed great poise when the race was very close and also the determination to not let anyone finish ahead of us on our home water.”

The second race of the day, the 2nd Varsity 8, saw the Tigers take a lead that they would never relinquish. Clemson took first with a time of 6:58.63 and Northeastern took second with a time of 7:11.48.

“The 2nd Varsity 8 had a terrific race this morning, leading from start to finish,” Tenenbaum said. “They were able to slowly move out on Northeastern throughout the race, and I was very pleased with the way they raced this morning.”

The Varsity 4s race was the only seven-boat race of the day. Clemson’s 1st Varsity 4 dominated the field, finishing with a time of 7:34.60. The closest battle took place between Northeastern’s 1st Varsity 4 and Clemson’s 2nd Varsity 4. Northeastern managed to edge Clemson in the last 300 meters to finish second with a time of 7:51.62. Clemson’s 2nd Varsity 4 finished third with a time of 7:54.94. Northeastern’s 2nd Varsity 4 finished fourth with a time of 8:07.34, while Clemson’s 3rd Varsity 4 finished fifth with a time of 8:18.42. Northeastern’s 3rd Varsity 4 finished sixth with a time of 8:22.78 and Clemson’s Novice 4 rounded out the field with a time of 8:28.23.

“Our 4s group had been working hard and they are getting better every practice,” said Tenenbaum.

In the final race of the day, the Novice 8, Clemson’s 1st Novice 8 took first with a time of 7:26.81. Northeastern’s Novice 8 took second with a time of 7:39.02, while Clemson’s 2nd Novice 8 finished third with a time of 7:47.57.

“The Novices continue to improve each week,” said Tenenbaum. “Our 1st Novice boat got a lead right off the start and opened up a boat length lead by 750 meters into the race. It is really excited to watch this group of novices develop from week to week.”

The Tigers return to action next Saturday, March 17, when they host Boston, Iowa, Indiana, Marist, Purdue and Syracuse at 9:00 AM on Lake Hartwell.
