The Clemson rowing team completed the home portion of their spring season with four first-place finishes against Kansas, Saturday morning on Lake Hartwell. The Tigers’ 1st Varsity 8, 2nd Varsity 8, Varsity 4, and 1st Novice 8 all recorded first-place finishes.

In the first race of the day, the 1st Varsity 8, the Tigers took a lead early and never let up. The reigning ACC Crew-of-the-Year defeated the Jayhawks’ 1st V8 boat by 26 seconds (6:26.08), one of their largest margins of victory of the year.

The second race of the day, the 2nd Varsity 8, saw the Tigers jump out to an early lead that they would never relinquish. Clemson defeated Kansas by an 18-second margin (6:39.59, 6:57.92).

In the Varsity 4s race, Clemson’s 1st Varsity 4, 2nd Varsity 4, 3rd Varsity 4 and Novice 4 took the first four spots, followed by the Jayhawks’ 1st Varsity 4. The final race of the day, the Novice 8, was a tight race in the beginning, before the Tigers 1st Novice 8 opened a lead over Kansas in the final 1000 meters. Clemson’s 1st Novice 8 took the race (7:00.48) followed by Kansas’ 1st and 2nd Novice 8, and Clemson’s 2nd Novice 8.

The Tigers return to action next weekend at the San Diego Crew Classic in San Diego, California.

“We had a great day of racing,” said Clemson Head Coach Robbie Tenenbaum. “I was particularly excited to see our 1st Varsity boat take charge of the race early and then open up a big lead. Our 1st Novice boat also had an outstanding race. They beat a very strong novice group from Kansas.”

“Our next race is the San Diego Crew Classic on March 31st and April 1st. We are going to be facing some very tough competition, and we are looking forward to a great weekend of racing against the nations top programs.”

“I am incredibly proud of our entire team. This group is working hard and excited to race the best next weekend.”
