Clemson Rowing Sweeps Augusta Invitational

March 22, 1999

AIKEN, SC – The Clemson rowing team swept the Augusta Invitational Regatta this weekend in Aiken, winning each race the team entered. The Tigers took the top two spots in the Women’s Varsity 8. The varsity team won their heat in 7:23.4, while the second varsity boat won their heat in 7:30.0. In the finals, Clemson’s varsity team won the race in 7:01.06, while the second varsity boat placed second in 7:08.4. The two boats defeated crews from the College of Charleston, Fordham, Army and Johns Hopkins.

In the Women’s Novice 8, the Clemson team won its heat in 7:47.1, then took first place with a time of 7:12.6 in the finals. The Tigers defeated Army, Savannah Art & Design, Fordham, Emory and the College of Charleston in the race.

The Junior Varsity race was a final only, with Clemson taking first place in 7:27.3. The College of Charleston was second at 7:45.8. The Women’s Varsity 4 also was a final-only race, with the Tigers defeating Fordham, Augusta State, Alabama and Cazenovia. Clemson clocked a 8:07.0, followed by Fordham at 8:10.1.

Clemson did surprisingly well in the point totals also, placing second overall. Regatta points are a combined effort between a school’s men’s and women’s programs, and the Tigers do not have a men’s program with which to combine their points.

“I couldn’t be more pleased with the performance of our women coming off a demanding week of training over Spring Break,” said head coach Susie Lueck. “They did an outstanding job and showed a lot of class in everything they did.”

The Tigers will compete in the Clemson Sprints Saturday on Lake Hartwell. Teams competing at the regatta include sixth-ranked Northeastern, Georgia Tech, Miami University, University of Miami, West Virginia, Furman, College of Charleston, The Citadel, Alabama and Auburn. In all, over twenty teams will compete at the regatta. Heats begin at 8 a.m., followed by the Finals at noon.
