Clemson Rowing Scrimmages Boston College & Penn

March 10, 2007

Clemson, SC – The Tiger rowing team played host to its second scrimmage of the week on Saturday. Clemson faced off against Boston College and Penn in three flights of racing action at Lake Hartwell. The three schools were treated to slightly cool temperatures and flat water during various pieces.

“It was a lot of fun to scrimmage Penn and BC this morning,” said Susie Lueck, head coach of the Tiger program. “Having six boats across in competitive pieces is exciting. Racing is what we love, so having the opportunity to go head to head for five pieces was great. The varsity 8+ had a lot of confidence going into this morning’s scrimmage and the second varsity 8+ gained a lot of confidence throughout the morning. I am glad we were able to scrimmage this early in the spring season.”

Clemson’s varsity 8+ jumped to an early lead off the line in all of the pieces. The Tigers withstood a strong sprint from Boston College to finish on top in each of the four races. Clemson’s top 1500m time was 5:12.20 by the first varsity 8+ in the first piece of the morning. In the 1000m rolling pieces, Clemson’s top varsity 8+ boat recorded a time of 3:23.20 in the second race which was best among the field. The Tigers’ second varsity boats had strong pieces by beating all other second varsity crews with the exception of Penn in the first piece.

Clemson lead from start to finish in each of the varsity 4+ pieces. The Tigers posted a time of 6:08.46 in the first 1500m piece, which was best among four crews. In the 1000m, Clemson had a time of 3:58.00 to easily win over the rest of the field.

The novice 8+ pieces were won by Penn’s top crew, with the Tigers finishing second in both 1500m races. The first novice 8+’s best time for Clemson was in the first piece at 5:52.19. In the 1000m pieces, Penn’s top boat also posted the fastest times Saturday. Clemson’s best time in those pieces was a 3:46.72 in the second race. The Tigers’ second novice 8+ did a good job, finishing ahead of Boston College’s first novice and Penn’s second novice crews. Clemson was also runner-up to Penn in each of the 500m pieces.

The Tigers return to action on Saturday, March 17 to play host to the Clemson Challenge regatta. Indiana, Marist, & Purdue will compete in that event with the Tigers.
