CLEMSON, SC – The Clemson women’s rowing team kicked of its spring racing season yesterday morning with the Annual Class Day regatta. This year there were six boats in the race: the traditional freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior boats, a novice entry and an alumni entry.
The conditions were cool with a stiff cross wind, and the freshman boat of coxswain Carissa Richardson, Aurelia Wurzel, MJ Keys, Giulia Longatti, Virginia Fritsche, Julia Ost, Sam Duggan, Stephannie Allen and Elise McVey took the early lead. The juniors with coxswain Katie Bruggeling, Vanesa Ewais, Sarah Monn, Heather Cummings, Sarah Young, Kristin Manna, Kate Biladeau, Ameerah Aly and Caroline Thomas quickly moved through about the 500 meter mark and held the lead the rest of the way down the race course.
At the finish, it was the juniors first with a time of 6:36.11. The sophomore boat made a fantastic charge in the last 1000 meters to put themselves in second place, finishing with a time of 6:40.94. The senior boat took third, led by coxswain Emily Massey, Taylor Hoynacki, Rebekah Clogston, Bre Przestrzelski, Brittany Burns, Katie Mosier, Becca Brown, Kenzie DuBrul and Kristen Agee. They also had a great last 1000 meters of the race.
“It was great to get out and have a race this morning,” said Clemson Head Coach Robbie Tenenbaum. “It is always fun to watch the class day unfold. The different classes present themselves to each other with their theme for the day, which usually includes some fun costumes. Our freshmen got out to a great start, but the day belonged to the juniors, who took the lead by the 500-meter mark and really controlled the race. We tell our student-athletes that everything they do matters, and class day is a great chance to show the coaches what you can do in a real race situation.”
“We will train hard this week as we prepare for our regular season opener against Eastern Michigan on Saturday, March 3rd at 9:00 am on Lake Hartwell.”
