Clemson Rowing Competes In First Day of San Diego Crew Classic

The Tiger rowing team competed today in the first day of racing at the 30th annual San Diego Crew Classic on Mission Bay in San Diego, CA. Clemson’s Varsity 8+ raced in the Jessop-Whittier Cup, the Second Varsity 8+ participated in the Women’s JV competition, and the Novice 8+ raced in the Women’s Collegiate Novice race. Both the Varsity 8+ and Second Varsity 8+ will move on to compete in the petite finals for their respective events.

In the Jessop-Whittier Cup the Tigers’ Varsity 8+ encountered some equipment problems, resulting in their seventh place finish. Stanford led the event finishing with a time of 6:56.9. They were followed in by USC (6:59.52), Oregon State (7:08.5), Tennessee (7:11.17), Wisconsin (7:14.72), Minnesota (7:16.87), and Clemson (7:16.99). The Varsity 8+ will face Duke, Tennessee, Kansas State, Wisconsin, Minnesota and San Diego State tomorrow at 11:40 a.m. in the petite finals.

The Second Varsity 8+ competing in the Women’s JV took third in a time of 7:49.89. Washington won the heat with a time of 7:29.33. Competing against the Tigers in the petite final of this event will be Texas, Kansas State, Oregon State, Sacramento State and the University of Massachusetts.

Participating in the Women’s Collegiate Novice event, Clemson’s Novice 8+ took fifth in its heat in 8:05.06. Washington State won this race in 7:44.8.

“The Tigers had solid racing today against strong opponents,” said head coach Susie Lueck. “We did not finish where would like to, but we will make improvements and find more speed for tomorrow.”

Clemson rowing will return to the water tomorrow morning for the last day of racing at the San Diego Crew Classic.
