Clemson Rowing Competes in Clemson Classic

CLEMSON, SC – The 24th-ranked Clemson rowing team competed in the Clemson Classic Sunday morning against #19 Duke, #17 Oregon State, Tennessee and #14 Washington State on Lake Hartwell.

In the varsity 8+ race, Clemson finished fourth, only 5.3 seconds behind ACC rival Duke (6.32.9). It was a close race between Oregon State and Washington State. Oregon State crossed the finish line 1.1 seconds ahead of Washington State to finish first. Oregon State posted a winning time of 6:29.4, while Washington State finished the course in 6:30.5. Tennessee finished fifth in 6:45.8.

Clemson’s varsity 4+ “A” recorded a time of 7:27.8 for a second-place finish, while Clemson “B” finished fifth in 7:55.7. The Tigers “A” boat edged Washington State by 1.7 seconds. Washington State completed the course in 7:29.5, while Duke won the race in 7:25.2. Tennessee placed fourth with a time of 7:36.1 and Clemson “B” finished fifth.

The Tigers’ novice 8+ boat had a solid race, posting a winning and season-best time of 6:56.4. Duke’s novice boat finished second with a time of 6:58.4, while Tennessee posted a time of 7:08.1 for a third-place finish.

In the novice 4+ race, Clemson “A” won with a time of 7:55.8. The Blue Devils “A” boat finished the course in 8:01.2, and their exhibition “B” boat finished third in 8:10.8. Clemson “B” finished fourth with a time of 8:58.9.

Clemson’s second varsity 8+boat also posted a season-best time in its race with a time of 6:43.5 for a second-place. Washington State edged Clemson by 1.9 second to win the race with a time of 6:41.6, and Tennessee finished third in 6:51.4. Duke posted a fourth-place finish and time of 7:05.7.

“The novice 8+ raced really well today and the second varsity 8+ improved on their winning margin against Duke,” said head coach Susie Lueck. “It was good for our boats to have the opportunity to race against other fast rowing programs. In the next few weeks we will look to find speed before competing in the South Region Championships.”

The Tigers will compete again on May 18-19 in Oak Ridge, TN, at the South Region Championships.
