Oct. 8, 2005

Chattanooga, TN – The Clemson rowing team competed at the 13th annual Chattanooga Head Race on Saturday. The event took place on the Tennessee River and the three-mile course finished in downtown Chattanooga. Clemson earned a pair of novice victories, while South Region foe Tennessee took first place in varsity 8+ and varsity 4+ events.

“It was an overcast day with windy conditions,” said Susie Lueck, Clemson’s head coach. “However it did not rain today, after raining in practice yesterday. The Tigers fared well in our first traveling opportunity this fall. We look forward to more racing.”

The first race of the day was the Championship 8+, where Tennessee claimed the top two finishing positions. Clemson’s A boat finished third with a time of 16:45, while the Tigers’ C boat finished fifth in 17:28.

The Tigers swept the top three positions in the novice 4+ race. Clemson’s C boat took home the top spot with a time of 18:49, while the A boat was second in 18:50 and the B boat finished the course in 19:05.

In the novice 8+ event, Clemson also claimed first place. The Tigers’ A boat finished in 18:20, while the B boat came home in third position with a time of 18:46. The final event of the day was the Championship 4+, where Tennessee took home the top two positions. Clemson finished third with a time of 18:17.3.

Clemson returns home next weekend and will hold the program’s annual Class Day regatta, where the four classes of rowers compete against one another. The event will also serve as the fall alumni & parents’ weekend on Lake Hartwell.
