Clemson Men’s Tennis Falls To Virginia, 5-2

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 45 University of Virginia men’s tennis team defeated No. 59 Clemson, 5-2, in an Atlantic Coast Conference match on Friday (Mar. 30) at the Snyder Tennis Center in Charlottesville, Va. The Cavaliers captured the doubles point by winning two-of-three doubles matches and then won four-of-six singles matches to cement the 5-2 victory.

UVa took on early 3-0 lead in the match. Virginia won at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles and Brian Vahaly and Brian Hunter won their singles matches in straight sets. Vahaly defeated the Tigers’ Brad Emendorfer, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 1, while Hunter downed Eric Cohn, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 5.

Clemson then staged a rally of its own with Marko Gojanovic and Lee Taylor Walker winning their matches at the No. 3 and No. 6 positions respectively. Virginia’s Michael Duquette then upended Micah Thompson, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 to end the rally and clinch the match.

With the match already decided, Huntley Montgomery defeated Clemson’s Daren Knight, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3, at No. 2 singles to make the final margin 5-2.

Clemson’s next action will be on Saturday, March 31 as the Tigers visit Maryland for a match scheduled at 10:00 AM.
