CLEMSON MEN’S SOCCER DOWNS RICHMOND 1-0 AT VCU INVITATIONAL

RICHMOND, VA — Paul Souders netted the game-winning goal with 26 seconds remaining in regulation to propel Clemson to a 1-0 victory over Richmond at VCU’s Nike/ALLTELL Invitational.

The play was set up as Brett Branan launched a throw-in that landed in the penalty area. Charlie Roberts then flicked the ball to Souders who slotted his shot into the goal.

“Richmond played very well tonight,” said head coach Trevor Adair. “They played really well on defense and it was hard to penetrate toward their goal. But we found a way to win. It wasn’t pretty, but we found a way to win.”

Freshman goalkeeper Phil Marfuggi made three saves and recorded a shutout in his first collegiate start for Clemson.

With the win, Clemson improves to 1-0 on the season, while Richmond falls to 0-1. The Tigers return to action on Sunday when they play VCU at 3:30 in the second round of the VCU Invitational.
