Clemson to Host 20th ACC Rowing Championship

CLEMSON, S.C. – Clemson is set to host the ACC Rowing Championship on Friday and Saturday May 17-18.  This is the 10th straight year that the championships will be contested on Lake Hartwell. The event is free and open to the public. Fans are encouraged to park by the soccer practice fields. Additionally, several construction projects on campus will affect traffic flow (more information here).

ACC Championship Home

This year, racing will return to a two day competition format with heats on Friday evening and finals on Saturday morning.  The Tigers will face off against eight other teams in five different boat classes.

“This year’s ACC Championship should have some close finishes and we think that Clemson will be right there in the mix,” said head coach Stephen Frazier Wong. “We’ve raced well against our conference competitors as the season has progressed and we’re excited to see what spot we can earn in this ultimate ACC battle.”

Three teams competing at the regatta are ranked in the top 20 of the USRowing/CRCA Coaches poll, with Virginia at No.10, Duke at No. 17 and Syracuse at No.18, while Louisville and Notre Dame received votes, but were not ranked. The University of Virginia has won 19 of the 20 ACC Championships held.  The only other team to win an ACC rowing championship was Clemson in 2009.  That same year, Clemson’s first varsity four went on to claim a national championship at the NCAA championship regatta.

Lane assignments for the grand and petite finals will be determined by finishing order from heats on Friday.  The top three in each heat will progress to the grand final, with the remainder of boats progressing to the petite final.

Racing will be broadcast on the ACC Network Extra beginning at 5:30 p.m. Friday and 8:00 a.m. Saturday. Following finals on Saturday, will be an awards ceremony to honor event medalists, the team points champion and All-ACC individuals.
