Clemson Fourth after First Round of Carpet Classic

CLEMSON, SC – Freshman Austin Langdale fired a one under par 71 to lead Clemson to a fourth-place standing after the first round of the Carpet Classic in Dalton, GA. It was the first round of the year for Larry Penley‘s Tigers, who brought three sophomores and two freshmen to the tournament.

Langdale, a freshman from Pendleton High School, had an eagle and three birdies to highlight his day. His eagle came on the 10th hole, a par four when he hit a pitching wedge from 138 yards into the hole for a two. He had two bogeys and a double bogey, but one of his birdies came on the 18th hole, when he made an 18-foot putt. Langdale is tied for fifth after the first round.

Cody Proveaux, who was Clemson’s number-one player in the lineup, had a one over par 73 on Friday. The sophomore got off to a strong start with two birdies within his first three holes. He made a bogey on the 18th hole or he would have started the year with an even par round. His 73 is tied for 17th in the individual race.

Miller Capps, Stephen Behr and Carson Young all had rounds of three over par 75, giving the Tigers a team round of six over par 294. Capps had two birdies and five bogeys, while Behr had a double bogey to finish each nine, but had three birdies on other holes.

Young, who was a late entry into the field after junior Billy Kennerly came down with an illness just before the team left for the tournament on Wednesday night, had two birdies and five bogeys. Young won the South Carolina Amateur this past summer.

Georgia is the team leader at 280 in the 14-team field at eight under par. North Carolina is second at 290, just four shots ahead of the Tigers. Georgia is in third place at 291. After the fourth place Tigers are North Florida (295), LSU (297) and Texas (298). Clemson did finish eight shots ahead of state rival South Carolina, who had a 302 team score on Friday.
