First Round Results
CLEMSON, S.C. — Senior Andrew Swanson shot a two-under-par 68, and junior Lucas Augustsson added a one-under 69 to lead Clemson to a tie for eighth-place with Long Beach State out of 30 teams after the first round of The Goodwin Golf Tournament at the Stanford University Golf Club in Palo Alto, Cal.
The 30 teams will play the second round on the par 70 course on Friday, then complete the tournament on Saturday. The field of 30 teams and 164 players is the largest regular season field in men’s college golf. The field includes 13 of the top 50 teams in the nation and 164 total players.
Clemson played in the morning wave and finished with a team score of even par 280, best among the 15 teams that played in that time period. Clemson is just one shot out of fifth place and just six shots off the lead. Clemson is ahead of seven top 50 teams, including 15th ranked UCLA, defending tournament champion Georgia and host school Stanford.
Swanson had nine-hole scores of 35-33 and is in a tie for ninth place in the individual race after 18 holes. His round included two birdies, an eagle and two bogeys. The eagle took place on the 505-yard par five 16th hole. Swanson drove the ball in the fairway, then hit a seven iron to 20 feet from the cup. He made the putt for his second eagle of the year, the ninth of his career. His 68 was the 24th round in the 60s of his career, his third in the last four rounds over three tournaments.
Augustsson’s one-under-par round included five birdies, including three on the back nine where he shot a 32, best among Clemson golfers. He was three-under par over his last 11 holes. It was the fifth round in the 60s this year for Augustsson, who finished a season best third place at a the Palmetto Intercollegiate in Clemson’s most recent tournament. He stands in a tie for 19th palace after the first round.
Freshman Rich Wills was Clemson’s third best golfer with a one-over-par 71. He had a 34 on the front side, best among Clemson golfers, then had aa 37 on the back. He finished the round with four birdies and five bogeys.
Senior Kian Rose had a two-ove- par 72 on Thursday. He had five birdies during his round, including three consecutive birdies on holes seven, eight and nine. Thomas Higgins had a five over par 75 in the opening round, but was one-under-par for his last seven holes.
Freshman Colin Salema is playing the event as an individual and shot a one-over par 71. It is his first tournament of the spring after suffering an injury in the fall.
