Clemson Falls to Number-One Ranked North Carolina

Oct. 18, 2001

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.–Anne Morrell scored a goal in the first three minutes of play and Anne Remy tallied a pair of second-half goals as #1-ranked North Carolina defeated #13 Clemson 3-0 in women’s soccer action on Thursday night.

The Tar Heels improved to 13-0 on the season with the win and they remain unbeaten in Atlantic Coast Conference play at 5-0. Clemson fell to 9-3 overall. The Lady Tigers, playing their third straight ACC road game, fell to 3-3 in the conference.

The Tar Heels struck in the third minute of the game. UNC goalkeeper Kristin DePlatchett served a long ball down the right side that was touched by a Clemson defender but then stolen by Carolina forward Alyssa Ramsey. Ramsey dribbled behind the defense and then centered to striker Anne Morrell who finished the chance to the right of Clemson goalkeeper Katie Carson.

Carson sparkled in goal for Clemson as she made eight second half saves, but the Tar Heels eventually wore the Lady Tigers down and scored twice in the last 13 minutes. At 77:17, Remy scored the first of her two goals as she fed Morrell in the right side of the box and then took a return pass from the freshman forward to strike a ball into the lower right corner from about 15 yards out. A little over seven minutes later Remy collected the ball on the right side, dribbled into the center of the field and scored her second goal of the game.

“We came against an inspired and motivated North Carolina team,” said Clemson Head Coach Todd Bramble. “We simply did not match their passion tonight. In the second half, the effort was better but it was too little too late. We cannot dwell on this loss, because we have another important ACC match on Sunday afternoon against NC State.”

Clemson will next be in action this Sunday as the Lady Tigers play host to NC State at 1:00 PM.
