Clemson Compliance Corner - IPTAY Members Interaction with Prospects Off-Campus

Please remember, as an IPTAY member, you are considered a representative of an institution’s athletics interests (i.e., booster) for Clemson University. As such, the NCAA has strict guidelines concerning boosters and their interaction with prospective student-athletes (i.e., generally 9th – 12th graders or any other unofficial visitors, prep school students, and junior college student-athletes). With ongoing fall/winter high school events occurring across the country, it is important we all let our Clemson Tigers coaches serve as the individuals recruiting our prospects rather than us as IPTAY members. For example, it is NCAA permissible as a booster to watch a Men’s Basketball recruit’s high school game. However, generally, IPTAY members should not also be having contact with these prospects for the purpose of building a Clemson connection or discussing the prospect’s recruitment. This would be contrary to NCAA rules and could affect the eligibility of the respective prospect should they enroll at Clemson University.

There are numerous cautionary tales within the NCAA’s Division I membership of 353 institutions involving off-campus contact by boosters with a prospective student-athlete, and it is imperative we do nothing to jeopardize the eligibility of future Clemson Tigers student-athletes. Please continue to Ask Before You Act and always feel free to contact Clemson University Athletic Compliance Services at cuacs@clemson.edu.
