Arnold Earns Bronze Medal at U23 World Rowing Championships

CLEMSON, SC – Former Tiger Marie Arnold earned a bronze medal while current Tiger Laura Basadonna and incoming rowers Marie Jacquet and Marissa Kump each recorded top-10 finishes in their respective events at U23 World Rowing Championships that concluded on Sunday.

“It was great seeing so many current and future Clemson student-athletes compete on the world stage in Linz-Ottensheim, Austria this past week,” said Clemson Head Coach Robbie Tenenbaum, who was in attendance. “Everyone had a great experience and represented their countries well. This type of international experience is invaluable in helping them to become better athletes and preparing them for future competition.”

Arnold, a native of Hannover, Germany, finished third in the 4X event as a participant of Germany to earn the bronze. She has now medaled in each of her three appearances at the U23 World Championships. The German team finished the World Championships with 11 total medals, most of any country.

Basadonna finished ninth in the 4- event as a member of the Italian team in her fourth appearance at the U23 World Championships. The Torino, Italy native was named second-team All-American, first-team All-South Region and CRCA National Scholar-Athlete earlier this summer following her junior season as a Tiger.

Basadonna’s Italian teammate, Aurelia Wurzel, also competed at the U23 event in the 1X competition. The native of Blevio, Como, Italy finished 20th in the event against stiff competition.

Jacquet, a native of Chalon sur Saone, France, finished eighth in the 4X event as a member of the French team.  Kump, who hails from St. Catherines, Ontario, Canada, finished fifth in  the Canadian boat in the 8+ event. Both made their first appearances at the U23 World Championships and will join the Clemson rowing team in the fall.
