Clemson, SC – The Clemson rowing team recorded a strong performance Saturday morning, competing against Northeastern and Eastern Michigan in the first regatta of the spring season.

“I am really proud of our team,” said Head Coach Robbie Tenenbaum. “We have worked hard all year in preparation for our spring season. Our student-athletes have responded really well to a new coaching staff, and I know that this is just the beginning of a great spring season. Our student-athletes are happy, healthy and ready for our next challenge.”

The first race of the day was the 1st Varsity 8. The race was close early, but Clemson edged ahead of Northeastern as the race progressed. The Clemson boat crossed the finish line with a time of 6:54.10. Northeastern and Eastern Michigan followed with times of 7:02.24 and 7:59.20, respectively.

In the 2nd Varsity 8 race, Northeastern and Clemson both pulled away from Eastern Michigan early in the race. Clemson held onto a slim one-two seat lead until the last 800 meters, when the Tigers were able to pull away to just over a length victory over Northeastern, with a time of 7:05.72. Northeastern recorded a time of 7:09.98. Eastern Michigan finished the race in third place with a time of 8:16.89.

The Varsity 4’s race was a battle all the way down the course. Early in the race, the top-two Clemson boats and the two Northeastern boats were all within a boat length of one another. About 900 meters into the race, the two Clemson boats started to pull away from the two Northeastern boats, but there was still a battle between Northeastern’s two 4’s and Clemson’s two 4’s. The race ended with Clemson “A” (7:53.17) edging out Clemson “B” (7:55.98) for first and second, and Northeastern “B” (8:01.64) edging out Northeastern “A” (8:04.20) for third and fourth place. Clemson’s “C” finished fifth (8:10.31) and Eastern Michigan followed in sixth place (9:41.63).

The last race of the day was the 3rd Varsity 8 race. Clemson’s “A” boat took an early lead, but there was a battle between Northeastern and Clemson “B”. About 750 meters into the race, the Clemson boat started to edge out on the Northeastern boat, and at the finish it was Clemson “A” (7:18.21), followed by Clemson “B” (7:36.62) and then Northeastern (7:51.93).

Video clips from the Tigers’ races against Eastern Michigan and Northeastern are now available on the Clemson Rowing Facebook Page.

The Tigers return to the water next Saturday, when they take on Charleston (WV) at 9:00 am.
