Tigers End Weekend With Run-Rule Victory

TAMPA, Fla. – The No. 5/5 Clemson Tigers bookended the weekend at the USF Tournament with an 8-0 run-rule victory in five innings against Michigan State (6-8). Following the win, Clemson improves to 15-1 on the year.

Clemson finished with nine hits led by McKenzie Clark and Valerie Cagle both tallying two. Cagle and Kyah Keller both tallied two RBI to help propel the Tigers to the win, as Clark and Maddie Moore finished with two runs each.

The Tigers scored first in the second inning after Caroline Jacobsen hit a double into center to lead off the inning. Alia Logoleo singled to bring Jacobsen home and make it 1-0 in Clemson’s favor. The momentum continued in the third inning after Clark, Moore and Cagle hit three-consecutive singles to load the bases. Jacobsen stepped to the plate and hit a sac fly to deep right to score Clark from third. Logoleo drew a walk in the next at bat to take first, but the final pitch wasn’t corralled which allowed Moore to come home from third to extend the Tigers’ lead to 3-0.

The bats came alive in the bottom of the fourth as Clark singled, stole second and was joined by Moore, who drew a walk. Cagle sent a shot into left center for a two-RBI triple. Jacobsen and Logoleo drew back-to-back walks to load the bases again that was followed by Aby Vieira hitting a single to bring home Sarah Howell, who was pinch running for Cagle at third. Keller stepped to the plate as a pinch batter with two outs and sent the third pitch of her at bat back up the middle to plate two runs and give Clemson the 8-0 lead.

The Tiger defense locked things down in the top of the fifth to seal the win.

Millie Thompson pitched her third complete game of 2023 and second solo shutout to improve to 5-0 on the year. The junior only faced 17 batters in her five innings of work, struck out six and only allowed two hits all while not giving up a walk.
