CLEMSON, S.C. – Clemson scored three in the first and fifth, Reese Basinger threw a complete game, and the Tigers (9-6) shut out Marshall (5-7) in a run-rule victory on Sunday afternoon to cap the Clemson Classic with a perfect 4-0 weekend. Senior Maddie Moore and freshman Ava Wilson led the way on offense, driving in two runs each.
The Tigers offense wasted no time, as Alex Brown scored on a throwing error on a fielder’s choice that had Julia Knowler reaching first and Moore safe at second. After a Macey Cintron walk, Aby Viera brought in Moore on a groundout to third. The very next batter, Wilson, singled to drive in Knowler and make it 3-0 after one.
Clemson put up one run each in the second and third innings. In the bottom of the second, two walks and a fielder’s choice brought Cintron to the plate with runners on the corners. She singled to left for her 16th RBI of the season, bringing home Jamison Brockenbrough. Wilson led off the third with her fourth home run of the season that went 243 feet out of center.
Three more runs scoring in the fifth inning brought an early end to the game. Freshman Riley Fennell singled to lead off the inning and earn her first career hit. Brockenbrough legged out a bunt, and Fennell took advantage of a converging infield, sped past second, and made it all the way to third on the play. After a popout, runners were on the corners for Moore, who hit her second triple of the season, scoring both the runners and upping her RBI total to 10.
Knowler came to the plate next and ended the game on the first pitch she saw, singling to center, bringing Moore home from third, good for her team-leading 21st RBI on the year.
Basinger went 5.0 innings, struck out five, allowed just four hits and shut out the Thundering Herd, bringing her ERA down below 2.00, and winning her third game of the campaign. This was Basinger’s first solo shutout of the season and 10th of her career.
