2008 All-ACC Academic Rowing Team Announced

July 31, 2008

Greensboro, NC – Eight Clemson rowers were named to the All-ACC Academic Team, as announced by Commissioner John D. Swofford on Thursday. Clemson tied Virginia for the most team selections with eight. Clemson’s honorees include Megan Bendik (Jr., Health Science), Catie Cornett (Sr., Psychology), Ford Heiner (Sr., Marketing), Nicole Rau (Jr., Biological Sciences), Elyse Roenick (Sr., Psychology), Mairi Trimboli (So., Economics), and Suzanne Van Fleet (Sr., Early Childhood Ed.).

This marks the third consecutive year that Van Fleet has been named to the All-ACC Academic Team. Rau was also named to the All-ACC Academic Team last year, and Heiner was honored in 2006. In addition, five student-athletes were also named National Scholar Athletes by the CRCA for their outstanding academic performances.

To be nominated for the ACC All-Academic team, student-athletes must have recorded a minimum of a 3.0 grade point average in the winter semester and have maintained a 3.0 career GPA. Selection is also based on athletic performance. Bendik, Heiner, Nance, Roenick and Van Fleet were all members of the Varsity 8+ crew that competed in the NCAA Championships for the first time in school history.

A total of three All-Americans, 14 CRCA Scholar-Athletes and seven CRCA All-Region honorees are featured on the 2008 All-ACC Academic Rowing Team. The 35 rowers were selected from a pool of 148 nominees from the ACC’s six schools who sponsor rowing–Boston College, Clemson, Duke, Miami, North Carolina–an impressive average of almost 25 nominees per school.
