Clemson, S.C.—Senior Carson Young shot a four-under-par 68 and sophomore Bryson Nimmer and freshman Doc Redman added two-under-par 70s to lead Clemson to a tie for fourth-place out of 14 teams after the first round of the Carpet Classic at The Farm in Dalton, Georgia. It was the first round of the season for Larry Penley’s 34th Clemson team, who are ranked 13th in the preseason poll.
Virginia and Auburn have the team lead at 12-under-par 276 after the first of three rounds on the par 72 course. Alabama is third at 281, seven-under-par. Clemson, LSU and South Carolina are all tied for fourth at 283, five-under-par. Tennessee and Florida are one shot back at 284.
Young started his senior year in fine fashion with his four-under-par round that included five birdies and just one bogey. He is tied for third place in the individual race. Nimmer’s 70 included six birdies, but he had two double bogeys. Redman, making his first appearance for Clemson, had six birdies and four bogeys. Both Clemson players are tied for 16th individually.
Josh Fickes got off to a rough start with a triple bogey on the second hole, but played the rest of the course at even par to shoot a 75. Freshman William Nottingham had a 77.
Clemson is playing this tournament with out returning All-ACC senior Austin Langdale, who is recovering from summer shoulder surgery.
