Women’s Tennis Wraps Up SE Regional

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Clemson women’s tennis team competed in the 1999 Southeast Regional November 4-8 in Winston-Salem, NC. The tournament featured 29 teams from around the Southeast, including five teams from the ACC.

Clemson sophomore Carmina Giraldo reached the finals of the singles main draw on Monday. She began the tournament on Friday, defeating Tennessee’s Crystal Cleveland 6-4, 6-2. On Saturday, Giraldo defeated Lauren Rookledge of Kentucky 6-1, 6-3, then beat Leigh Eichelberger of South Carolina 6-1, 7-5. In Sunday’s action Giraldo defeated Erica Biro of Duke 6-1, 7-5 to reach the semifinals, where she beat Janet Bergman (Wake Forest) 7-5, 7-6. Kathy Sell of Duke defeated Giraldo in the finals 3-6, 6-3, 6-1.

In other singles action, senior Cath Galvin defeated Forbes Thompson of Davidson 6-3, 6-4 on Friday. On Saturday she dropped a 6-1, 7-5 decision to Tina Hojnik of Middle Tennessee State. Rookie Anna Savitskaya defeated NC State’s Loni Worsley 6-3, 6-2 on Friday, before losing to Alison Ojeda of Tennessee 6-3, 6-4 on Saturday. Freshman Laurence Jayet lost a qualifying match to Amy Trefethen of Kentucky 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 on Thursday.

In the doubles main draw, Giraldo and Galvin were defeated by Eichelberger and Tan of South Carolina 8-6 on Friday.
