Women’s Tennis To Play William & Mary in NCAA Championships

CLEMSON, S.C. – The 40th-ranked Clemson women’s tennis team will travel to Winston-Salem, NC to take on 16th-ranked William & Mary in the first round of the 2002 NCAA Women’s Tennis Championship on Sat., May 11. The match is scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m at Leighton Tennis Stadium on Wake Forest’s campus.

Entering the match, the Tigers are 13-10 overall and 5-3 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, while the Tribe has a 19-7 overall record and a 3-0 record in the Colonial Athletic Association. The winner of the match will take on the winner of #8 Wake Forest vs. American on Sun., May 12 at 1:00 p.m. The team championship will be held in Stanford, CA on May 16-19.

Clemson is 1-1 all-time against William & Mary. The last meeting between the two teams was on Mar. 14, 1993, when the Tigers won a 7-1 decision over the Tribe in Miami, FL.

The Tigers’ last trip to the NCAA Championship was in 2000 when they traveled to Palo Alto, CA to take on Fresno State. Clemson fell in the first round of the tournament to the Bulldogs by a score of 5-3.

Clemson’s Alix Lacelarie was selected to play in the NCAA Individual Championship tournament to be held May 20-25 at Stanford’s Taube Tennis Center. Lacelarie, a freshman from Villeneuve-Les-Beziers, France, is currently ranked #32 by the ITA in singles. She has a 17-5 overall record in dual matches this season and a 6-2 record in the ACC.
