Women’s Tennis To Begin Play In ACC Tournament

CLEMSON, SC – The Clemson women’s tennis team will begin play at the 2006 ACC Championships, to be held at the Cary Tennis Center in Cary, NC, on Friday, Apr. 21. With an 8-3 conference record, the team received the number four seed in the tournament and, therefore, a first-round bye in the event. The Tigers will face fifth-seeded North Carolina, who won a 4-0 decision over Boston College on Thursday morning, in second-round action at 9:00 AM on Friday.

After a 4-4 start to the season, Clemson rattled off eight straight wins to improve to 12-4. They then fell in back-to-back matches at Miami and Duke before posting wins in the last three contests of the regular season for a 15-6 overall ledger.

Overall, Clemson has compiled a 24-18 record when competing in the conference championships. The Tigers have won the tournament title three times in program history with the last occuring in the 2004 season. Since the tournament changed to the current format that includes semifinals and finals rounds in 1990, Clemson has made nine semifinals appearances and advanced to the finals four times.

Under current head coach Nancy Harris, the Tigers have a 7-7 record in the ACC Tournament. Clemson has reached the semifinals four times and won the title once in her eight previous seasons.

The Tigers lead the series score against North Carolina by a 32-12 margin and have won the last five meetings between the two schools. During the regular season, Clemson upset then-ranked #5 UNC by a score of 4-3 in Chapel Hill, NC on Apr. 9. The Tigers also hold a 9-4 advantage in matches played on neutral courts and has won five of eight meetings over the Tar Heels in the ACC Tournament.
