March 6, 2007

CLEMSON, SC – After knocking off sixth-ranked Georgia Tech last week, the Clemson women’s tennis team is ranked eighth in this week’s Fila/ITA Tennis poll. The Tigers moved into the top 10 for the first time since earning the #10 ranking in the final poll of the 2005 season, and the number-eight ranking is their highest since being listed seventh in the first poll of 2005.

Along with its win over Georgia Tech last Saturday, Clemson also posted a 6-1 victory over South Alabama last week to improve to 9-2 on the year.

In the ITA singles poll, Ani Mijacika headlined four ranked Tigers at #47. She boasts a 13-5 overall record with an 8-2 ledger in dual matches this season. Mijacika is the reining ACC Player-of-the-Week after posting upsets in both singles and doubles matches last week. Estefania Balda was then listed 63rd with an 8-3 record since enrolling at Clemson in January. Carol Salge was ranked #80, as she owns a 9-10 record in the fall and spring seasons combined and is 4-3 against ranked opponents this year. Finally, Federica van Adrichem was listed 93rd after winning three straight singles contests to improve to 8-1 during the dual season.

Mijacika and van Adrichem defeated their third nationally ranked team last week with a victory over Georgia Tech’s #18 duo. The Clemson pair now boasts a 7-2 record during the spring season and was ranked 12th in Tuesday’s poll. Mijacika teamed with Salge to compile a 6-2 record during the fall season and reach the finals of the Wilson/ITA Southeast Regional in October and the duo ranks 17th. The tandem of Salge and van Adrichem was listed 57th as the pair owns a 4-0 mark, while Maria Brito and Alexandra Luc ranked #60 after winning nine of their last 10 doubles matches for an impressive 12-3 record.

The Tigers will continue their ACC schedule this weekend as they will travel to Boston College and Maryland.
