CLEMSON, SC – The Clemson women’s tennis team is ranked #17 in the preseason Fila/ITA Tennis poll, as announced on Tuesday afternoon. The Tigers, one of seven ACC teams listed in the top 25, posted a 17-8 overall record last year and return five letterwinners for the 2007 season. Meanwhile, five freshmen will see their first dual-match action later this month.
With the ranking, Clemson has now been listed in the top 25 entering the season for the third straight year.
In the preseason singles rankings, junior Carol Salge is listed 72nd. The native of San Roque, Brazil compiled a 7-4 record during the fall season. She earned an invitation to the ITA National Indoor Championships in November, where she won her opening-round match before falling in the round of 16.
Salge is also ranked in the doubles poll with two different partners. The tandem of Salge and Ani Mijacika is listed at #33 after boasting a 6-2 record during the fall. The Tiger team won four straight matches at the Wilson/ITA Southeast Regional in October to reach the finals of the event. Salge and Mijacika then upset the #7-ranked team from Miami during the Hurricanes’ tournament in November.
Paired with Federica van Adrichem, Salge is ranked 37th. The duo won the flight one doubles bracket at the Furman Fall Classic in September for a 3-0 record during the fall.
The Tigers will open their 2007 spring season on Jan. 27 as they will welcome the College of Charleston to the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center.
