Women’s Tennis Players Mijacika and Van Adrichem to Open Play at ITA All-American Championships On Thursday

Oct. 3, 2007

PACIFIC PALISADES, CA – The main draw of the 23rd annual Riviera ITA All-American Championships is scheduled to begin on Oct. 4 with Clemson women’s tennis players Ani Mijacika and Federica van Adrichem earning invitations to the tournament, which is held at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, CA. Mijacika will compete in singles on Thursday and will also team with Van Adrichem in doubles play.

The Tiger tandem is ranked #2 in the preseason Fila/ITA Tennis poll and, therefore, was selected as the second seed in the 16-team field. Mijacika and Van Adrichem will face Notre Dame’s duo of Brook Buck and Kelcy Tefft in the opening round. The two teams met in the first round of the NCAA Doubles Championships last season. Clemson won the match, 6-4, 7-6, and eventually advanced to the semifinals of the tournament, earning All-American honors. The pair owns a 2-1 record so far in the 2007 fall season.

In singles play, #21 Mijacika will face second-ranked Lindsey Nelson of Southern California. The Tiger sophomore is coming off of a successful weekend at the Furman Fall Classic as she claimed the flight one title for a 3-0 ledger.

In the qualifying round of the ITA All-American on Wednesday, Clemson’s Carol Salge fell to Reka Zsilinkzka of Duke in the round of 16 (6-3, 4-6, 6-4). Tiger Estefania Balda suffered a 6-3, 6-4 loss to Texas’ Courtney Zauft in the consolation round. In doubles action, the pair was defeated in the round of 16 by Amanda Fink and Gabriela Niculescu of Southern California, 8-3.
