WINSTON-SALEM, NC – Romy Koelzer and Yana Koroleva are into the quarterfinals of the hotly contested USTA/ITA Carolina Regional Tennis Singles Championships. Both players knocked off seeded players on their way into the round of eight.
Koelzer, a sophomore from Betzdorf, Germany has had a terrific run, defeating the nation’s No. 27 player Marianne Jodoin of Duke in two sets that went deep into tiebreakers. Jodoin was a 9-16 seed in the draw. The win was the highest-ranked opponent Koelzer has defeated in her young career.
She followed that win up with a straight-set win over F]Dominika Kanakova of South Carolina, 7-6(7), 6-3, before defeating Ashley Dai of North Carolina rather handily, 6-3, 6-0. Dai had the upset of the tournament so far, knocking off the draw’s top overall seed, NC State’s Joelle Kissell, in the first round.
Koelzer will meet Whitney Kay of North Carolina in the Quarterfinals.
Koroleva has had an equally impressive and challenging run to the quarters. She cruised to wins in the first two rounds, a 6-2, 6-1 win over Yvonne Hubler of Charleston Southern and a 6-2, 6-0 defeat of Bryn Khoury of Elon. That win set up a meeting with the No. 2 overall seed in the draw, Lauren McHale of North Carolina, who is ranked 24th in the nation. Koroleva downed the Tar Heel in a three-setter, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. She’ll face off with Mary Clayton of Duke in the quarterfinals on Sunday.
Also competing in the tournament were Beatrice Gumulya and Tristen Dewar. Gumulya won her first two matches, but fell to No. 4 seed Zoe De Bruycker of North Carolina in a marathon, 7-6, 6-7, 6-3 decision. Gumulya had won 16 straight matches dating to last season, and had her streak halted by the No. 26 player in the country. Gumulya entered ranked 83rd in the country, and was a 9-16 seed.
Dewar won her debut over Wake Forest’s Kathryn Talbert, 6-1, 1-6, 6-3 before falling to No. 78 Caroline Price of North Carolina in the round of 32.
In doubles, Koroleva and Gumulya advanced to the quarterfinals before falling to Kay and Dai, 9-8(5). Dear and Koelzer advance to the second round, but were ousted by Mary Clayton and Annie Mulholland of Duke in the second round.
The women will play two rounds of singles on Sunday, with the singles finals scheduled for Monday. The winner of the tournament will play at the ITA Indoor National Championships in Flushing, NY in November.
