Women?s Tennis (@ClemsonWTennis) Opens Fall Season

CLEMSON, SC – The Clemson women’s tennis team, which finished the 2013 season ranked 13th in the nation, will open play in the fall individual schedule this weekend. The team will be split between the Furman Fall Classic in Greenville, SC, and the Riviera ITA All-American in Pacific Palisades, CA. The Fall Classic runs this weekend, from Sept. 28-30, while the All-American runs from Sept. 28-Oct. 6 in various stages.  Ani Miao, Tristen Dewar, Joana Eidukonyte, and Carola Pederzani will play in the singles draw at Furman. Miao and Pederzani will be paired, as will Beatrice Gumulya and Eidukonyte and Yana Koroleva and Dewar. At the All-American, four players have earned bids to compete in California. Jessy Rompies and Romy Koelzer will partake in the pre-qualification tournament beginning Friday. The players who win two matches in that draw earn a bid in the Qualifying Tournament. Beatrice Gumulya has earned an automatic bid to that draw. Then, the eight players who emerge from the Qualifying draw will join the 24 automatic bids in the Main Draw to determine a national champion.  Yana Koroleva, who is ranked 7th in the nation, earned a bid to the Main Draw, which takes place from Oct. 3-6.  Koroleva and Gumulya have also earned a bid to the Main Draw Doubles bracket, as they are ranked 13th in the nation as a duo.  This year’s Furman Fall Classic includes Alabama, Florida State, Furman, Iowa, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Vanderbilt, as well as Clemson. Players will enter into flighted draws of four players each, with three wins claiming that flight.  The All-American includes players from Division-I universities all around the country, and is each player for themselves against the top players. It is considered one of the “Grand Slam” events of collegiate tennis, which also includes the ITA Indoor Nationals and the NCAA Tournament in the spring season.
