Women’s Soccer Falls To Cal State Fullerton, 1-0

Sept. 19, 2003

Box Score

Fullerton, Calif. – The old adage “it only takes one” proved true on Friday night.

Despite being outshot 20-8 by No. 13 Clemson, the Cal State Fullerton women’s soccer team got a much-needed victory over ranked opposition as sophomore Kandace Wilson tallied her third goal of the season in the 60th minute lifting the Titans to a 1-0 upset of the Tigers at Titan Stadium.

Cal State Fullerton snaps its two-match losing streak and improves to 4-2 overall on the season, winning the first-ever meeting with the Tigers and notching the school’s first-ever win against an ACC opponent. Clemson fell to 5-2 overall.

Wilson’s goal came after a scoreless 59 minutes, dominated offensively by the Tigers. Sophomore Desiree Flint played a through ball perfectly to Wilson, who moved around the marking defender and around a charging goalkeeper, firing to the far right post to an empty net for the only score of the match.

Laura Janke snuffed out the Tigers best scoring opportunity in the 22nd minute, keeping the match scoreless when she smothered Clemson’s Allison Graham’s penalty kick attempt to the left post. Janke made five saves in the opening period and finished with seven saves for the match.

The Titans had a couple of chances of their own in the first half as sophomore Marlene Sandoval’s rocket from about 35 yards out just cleared the hands of a leaping Lauren Whitt and glanced off the crossbar back into play. There, the ball was settled by Amy Stanley and fired back in where Whitt made the save to preserve the shutout.

Clemson held an 11-2 advantage in shots in the first half and an 8-2 lead in corner kicks in the opening period of play (9-5 overall). Sophomore Marlene Sandoval led the way for the Titans with four shots on the night while the Tigers were paced by Graham’s seven shots on the night.

“It was very frustrating tonight,” said Clemson Head Coach Todd Bramble. “I was pleased with our effort, but disappointed in the result. We could not finish in the match. Laura Janke, the Cal State-Fullerton goalkeeper, had a really good match. She made several great saves. The credit goes to Cal State-Fullerton.”
