SAN DIEGO – Clemson’s rowing team completed its weekend of competition in San Diego at the Whittier Cup with a pair of top five finishes in petite final races. It was the second day of competition against a national field of teams. Seven of the top 10 teams in the nation were involved in the weekend regatta held in Mission Bay.

Clemson’s varsity 8+ finished fourth with a time of 7:00.4 in the petite cup final. Oregon State won the event at 6:52.3, while Washington State was second at 6:55.9. Michigan State, ranked eighth in the nation, was third at 6:57.5, followed by Susie Lueck’s Lady Tigers. San Diego State was fifth at 7:00.8, while Duke was sixth at 7:13.6.

In the Second Varsity 8+ competition, Clemson was fifth with a time of 7:01.5. California was fifth with a 6:56.3 time, followed by Wisconsin’s 6:57.0. San Diego State was third at 6:57.2, while Michigan State was fourth at 6:59.8. Clemson was fifth, followed by Texas with a time of 7:02.3.

“This was a great experience for our team,” said Lueck, in her second year as head coach of Clemson’s young program. “It was exciting to compete against the top teams in the country. Every team here is ranked in the top 20 in the nation except for Clemson and Duke, so it was a high level of competition.”
