GREENVILLE, SC – Two Clemson women’s tennis players advanced to the finals of their respective brackets while the Tigers picked up seven singles wins overall on Saturday at the 2008 Furman Fall Classic. Ani Mijacika and Alexandra Luc highlighted play for Clemson as each recorded a pair of wins and both will vie for flight titles on Sunday.
Play is scheduled to begin at 9:00 am at the Mickel Tennis Center on the campus of Furman University.
Mijacika won in straight sets over Rosalia Alda of Tennessee to open singles play at flight one (6-2, 6-4). The Tiger junior then defeated Furman’s Laura Gioia in the semifinals, 6-2, 7-5, and will face Ana Zubori of South Carolina in Sunday’s final. Mijacika will be going for her second straight title in the top bracket at the Furman Fall Classic.
In the number-four bracket, Alexandra Luc defeated Vanderbilt’s Courtney Ulery, 6-1, 6-4. The native of Paris, France then won her second-round match after falling in the first set, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1, versus Jennifer Meredith of Tennessee. She will match up against Florida State’s Federica Suess in the championship match on Sunday.
At flight two, Clemson’s Josipa Bek won a three-set battle over Sophie Grabinski of North Carolina (6-4, 4-6, 7-5) to open play but fell to Northwestern’s Maria Mosolova in another tough three-set match (7-6, 6-7, 6-2). She will take on Lauren MacFarlane of Florida State in the number two consolation final.
Ina Hadziselimovic dropped a 6-4, 7-5 decision in her first-round match against Georgia Rose of Northwestern at flight three but rebounded to post a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Furman’s Jessica Preeg in the consolation rounds. Senior Federica van Adrichem fell in the opening round as well, suffering a 6-2, 6-3 loss to Chelsea Preeg of Vanderbilt. She then won her consolation match against North Carolina’s Meg Fanjoy (6-2, 3-6, 6-4).
In other women’s tennis action on Saturday, Estefania Balda and Laurianne Henry both fell in their first matches of the Riviera/ITA All-American prequalifying round. Balda was defeated by Brittany Blalock of Cal Poly (6-0, 5-7, 6-0), while Henry fell to Fresno State’s Renata Kucerkova (6-3, 7-5).
