Nov. 5, 2008

CLEMSON, SC – Clemson women’s tennis players Ani Mijacika and Josipa Bek will begin play at the prestigious ITA National Indoor Championships on Thursday, Nov. 6 in Charlottesville, VA. The University of Virginia will serve as host with the tournament to be held at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. Mijacika and Bek both earned invitations to the singles draw, mark the first time the Tigers have had a pair of singles competitors in the tournament under 11th-year head coach Nancy Harris.

Mijacika will be making her second appearance at the event after reaching the finals of last year’s tournament. The Clemson junior earned the second seed in the tournament and will take on Kelcy McKenna of Arizona State in the first round. Bek, a freshman from Osijek, Croatia, received a bid after winning the Wilson/ITA Southeast Championship on Oct. 27. She will face Southern California’s Maria Sanchez on Thursday.

Fans can follow the action with live updates on Virginia’s website or by accessing www.itatennis.com.

The ITA championships features a 32-player singles field and 16-team doubles field for men and women, including: qualifiers from Wilson/ITA Regional Championships held across the country during October, the ITA National Small College champions, the winners of the D’Novo/ITA Men’s All-American Tennis Championships and Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships, and at-large and wild card selections made by the ITA National Tournament Committee. Overall, more than 10,000 players from nearly 600 schools participate annually in the Wilson/ITA Regional and National Intercollegiate Championships.
