LADY TIGERS AND DEMON DEACONS BATTLE TO 0-0 TIE Clemson advances by beating Wake Forest 3-1 in penalty kicks.
The eighth-ranked Clemson Lady Tigers and the 11th-ranked Wake Forest Demon Deacons battled to a 0-0 tie at Riggs Field (November 20) in the Round of 16 of the 1999 Women’s NCAA Tournament. The Lady Tigers advance to the next round by defeating the Demon Deacons 3-1 in penalty kicks.
Clemson is now 14-6-2 overall. Wake Forest finishes the season 16-6-1. The game officially ends in a tie.
Lady Tiger freshman Cindy Mullinix scored what proved to be the key penalty kick for Clemson. After both teams missed their opening shot, Lady Tiger Heather Beem hit her shot past Demon Deacon keeper Erin Reagan. Wake Forest freshman responded when she hit a shot that went just over the out-reached arms of Clemson goalie Katie Carson. Mullinix then drilled her kick into the net and Demon Deacon Emily Taggart followed with a shot that hit the crossbar and caromed out.
Clemson junior Nancy Augustyniak added the insurance penalty kick before Wake Forest senior Anne Shropshire’s shot was saved by Carson to seal the win in the penalty kick round.
The two teams combined for 34 shots and 13 corners in regulation and the four fifteen minute overtime periods.
