Tigers Earn Gritty 4-0 Win Over Columbia

MALIBU, Calif. – The Clemson women’s tennis team (5-1) pulled off an incredible 4-0 victory over Columbia on Sunday at ITA Kickoff Weekend. The Tigers endured a rain delay to take the doubles point and get the job done in singles to clinch the victory.

“Today we established what Clemson Women’s tennis is about,” said a jubilant Head Coach Amy Sargeant. “We are fearless, gutsy, and we play for each other.

“I am so unbelievably proud of their heart and willingness to find a way. Today we grew from within and will continue to play on our terms and with our strengths. Culture prevailed today.”

Doubles play was interrupted by a rain delay, but Clemson was able to maintain its focus. The pair of Sophia Hatton and Dani Medvedeva got a win on Court 3, and Samantha Buyckx and Jenna Thompson earned a doubles win for the second consecutive day to clinch the doubles point.

Singles play saw impressive performances by Cristina Mayorova and Buyckx to earn straight set victories. With all four remaining matches in the balance, Thompson handled business to close out the match. After battling for a 7-6 set 1 victory, she dropped the second set. With the match on the line, she came out in the third set and dominated, clinching the victory with a 7-6, 1-6, 6-0 win.

The Tigers will be back home on Friday, Feb. 3 at 1 p.m. to take on Georgia Southern.
