Tigers Dominate Duckworth Winter Classic

CLEMSON, S.C. – The Tigers won flight championships in all four singles flights and all three doubles flights on Sunday to conclude the two-day Duckworth Winter Classic at the Clemson Indoor Tennis Center. For the tournament, Clemson players were 16-2 in singles play and 10-1 in doubles matches.

In doubles action, Clemson’s Beatrice Gumulya and Jessy Rompies, ranked second in the nation, won all three of their matches at flight one to win the flight title, while Tristen Dewar and Romy Koelzer were 3-0 at flight two and Joana Eidukonyte and Daniela Ruiz were 3-0 at flight three to claim their respective flight championships.

Koelzer was 3-0 in singles play at flight one, claiming the championship for the top singles draw. Dewar won the flight two singles title with a 2-0 record, while Rompies was 3-0 and took top honors at flight three singles. Carola Pederzani posted a 3-0 record in round robin singles play to win the flight championship at four.

The Tigers return to action next weekend when they host the ITA Kickoff Weekend on Saturday, Jan. 24 and Sunday, Jan. 25. Clemson faces Winthrop on Saturday at 1 p.m., while Purdue and Washington square off in the 9 a.m. match at the Clemson Indoor Tennis Center. On Sunday, the consolation match is set for 9 a.m., while Saturday’s two winners meet in the championship match at 1 p.m., with a berth in the ITA Team Indoor Championships in Charlottesville, Va. on Feb. 5-8 on the line.
