CLEMSON, SC – The Clemson women’s tennis team will begin play in the 2006 ITA Southeast Regional on Thursday, Oct. 12. This year’s tournament will be held at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center on the campus of the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, NC. The qualifying singles and doubles competitions will begin on Thursday, while the main draw singles bracket is slated to start on Friday morning.
Tigers Kathi Gerber and Ina Hadziselimovic will open play on Thursday morning in the qualifying singles bracket. Hadziselimovic will face Chelsea Albertz of the College of Charleston at 8:00 am, while Gerber’s first-round match against North Carolina’s Alex Jurewitz is scheduled for a 10:00 am start time.
In doubles competition, Clemson’s tandem of Maria Brito and Alexandra Luc will play UNC-Greensboro’s team of Valerie Behr and Lisa Suggs at 3:00 pm. Gerber and Hadziselimovic will also face a Spartan team as their match against Arielle Vonstrolley and Erica Zabkar is slated to begin at 6:00 pm. Two Tiger teams earned first-round byes and will begin play on Friday. Ani Mijacika and Carol Salge received a #5-seed, while Selma Babic and Federica van Adrichem are seeded ninth.
Five Clemson players will also begin singles action on Friday in the main draw of the tournament. Salge, who was seeded #5 in singles, will face Emily Wade of UNC-Greensboro at 9:30 am. The ninth-seeded Mijacika’s first-round opponent is yet to be determined as her 8:00 am match will be against a player from the qualifying bracket. Luc is scheduled to play Vanderbilt’s #1-seeded Amanda Fist at 11:30 am, while Brito will face #2-seed Tarika Bertrand, also from Vandy, at 8:00 am.
Van Adrichem, the defending ITA Southeast Regional champion, will not participate this weekend in singles.
