Tiger Rowing Ranked 12th in Latest US Rowing/CRCA Poll

March 28, 2007

Clemson, SC – The Tigers’ varsity 8+ is ranked 12th in the latest U.S. Rowing/CRCA poll, which was released Wednesday. Clemson went from being unranked to 12th in the nation after a strong performance against three nationally-ranked crews last weekend in Michigan. It is the highest ranking in school history. The previous high was a #15 ranking in the spring of 2001.

“It’s exciting for the rowers because they have trained hard,” said Susie Lueck, head coach of the Tiger program. “It’s nice to get some recognition and for our race results to be noticed. On the other hand, people that have noticed what we do will put more pressure on us to perform. It’s a challenge we’re looking forward to. Being nationally ranked can only be positive in terms of the future, especially with recruiting.”

Clemson’s varsity 8+ was named ACC Crew of the Week on Monday after putting together a first-place finish over Michigan, Michigan State, and Notre Dame over the weekend. The Tigers had a season-best time of 6:51.36 and earned the school’s first-ever head-to-head varsity 8+ victories over Michigan and Michigan State. The Tigers also topped the Irish, who won the varsity 8+ petite final at NCAAs last season.

The Tigers return to action this weekend for the San Diego Crew Classic. Clemson will take on the likes of Oregon State, Southern Cal, and UCLA in their heat. The top three boats from each heat advance, giving Clemson the possibility of facing top-ranked teams such as California, Stanford, and Washington State.
