Clemson golfers Brian Duncan, Stephen Poole and Vince Hatfield all ranked in the final top 50 of the Golfweek/Sagarin Computer rankings released Monday.
Clemson did not have a player ranked in the top 50 at the end of last season and the last time Clemson had at least three players in the final top 50 was 2003 when the National Championship Clemson team had four top 50 players in D.J. Trahan (2), Jack Ferguson (5), Matt Hendrix (9) and Gregg Jones (41).
Brian Duncan is the highest ranked Clemson player at #27 with a computer rating of 70. 76. The senior from Greenville was in the top 40 all season and reached a high of #17 in April. He finished the season with a team best eight top 20 finishes in his 11 events and had a 73.15 stroke average for the season, second on the team. He had a 290 score at the NCAA National Tournament to tie for 32nd .
Stephen Poole, Clemson’s leader in stroke average at 73.08 for the year, finished 42nd in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings with a 70.98 rating. The native of Spartanburg, who also graduated from Clemson on May 12, led the team in under par rounds with 13. He was the only Tiger to win a tournament this year as he took medallist honors at the United States Collegiate April 10-11. Like Duncan, Poole shot a 290 for the four rounds of the NCAA Tournament to finish in a tie for 32nd.
Vince Hatfield is the third Clemson player ranked in the top 50. The freshman from Greenwood, SC finished his rookie year ranked 46th in the nation with a 71.04 rating. His #46 national ranking is the third best in Clemson history for a freshman, trailing only the #22 by D.J. Trahan in 2000 and #45 by Jonathan Byrd in 1997. Hatfield finished the year with a 73.55 stroke average, tied for fifth best in Clemson history among freshmen with former Tiger Chris Patton (1986-87).
As a team, Clemson finished eighth in the nation with a 71.13 rating according to the Sagarin/Golfweek poll. National Champion Oklahoma State was first with a 69.80 figure, while Georgia was second on the computer rankings with a 69.83 figure. Georgia Tech was the highest ranked ACC team with a 70.73 rating to rank fourth.
Clemson finished the year with the number-one schedule ranking in the nation (71.82). It marks the second time in four years Clemson had the top schedule ranking as Clemson also held that honor the year the Tigers won the National Championship.
Clemson finished in a tie for seventh at the NCAA Championships last weekend, it’s best finish since winning the National Championship in 2003.
