Three Tigers Qualify For NCAA Indoor Track And Field Championships

BOONE, N.C. – The Clemson men’s track and field team opened its 2001-2002 indoor season Thursday at the First Appalachian Indoor Meet hosted by Appalachian State University. Five Tigers qualified either automatically or provisionally for the NCAA Indoor Championships to be held in Fayetteville, AR, on Mar. 8-9, 2002. David Collins, Larry Griffin, and Todd Matthews posted qualifying marks in two events.

In the 55m dash, junior David Collins (Philadelphia, PA) posted an automatic qualifying time of 6.15, winning the event. Sophomore Larry Griffin (Greenville, SC) finished second with a provisional qualifying time of 6.24, while freshman Eugene Lee (Augusta, GA) posted a third-place finish among collegiate competitors with a time of 6.26.

Freshman George Kitchens (Hephzibah, GA) led the Tigers in the 200m dash with a third-place finish in 22.59.

Junior Otto Spain (Columbia,SC) won the 400m dash with a time of 48.42, and freshman Ronald Richards (Alexandria, VA) finished third among collegiate competitors in 50.25.

In the 800m run, sophomore Marcus Hodge (Spartanburg, SC) led the tigers with a second-place finish in 1:54.86, and junior Garrick Copes (Fort Belvoir, VA) placed third in 1:57.14.

Junior Jason Meany (Liverpool, NY) won the 3000m run with a time of 8:48.64, followed by sophomore David Adams (Bluffton, SC) who was the runner up in 8:53.46.

In the 55m hurdles, senior Todd Matthews (Trenton, NJ) won the event with a provisional qualifying time of 7.26, and sophomore Shauntae Lovings (LaGrange, TX) finished third with a time of 7.38.

Clemson’s team of senior Kai Maull (Lewes, DE), freshman Michael Bolling (Willingboro, NJ), Garrick Copes and Otto Spain won the 4x400m relay with a time of 3:17.57.

The Tigers’ distance medley relay team of David Adams, Ronald Richards, Marcus Hodge and Jason Meany won the event with a time of 10:34.54.

Senior Doug Ameigh (Washingtonville, PA), sophomore Terrance McDaniel (Gray Court, SC) and sophomore Bryant Howe (St. Paul, MN) swept the top spots in the high jump. Ameigh cleared 2.11m (6’11”) to win the event, while McDaniel and Howe tied for second, clearing 2.07m (6’9 1/2″).

Junior Ryan Lewis (Roswell, GA) and freshman Andrew Kessler (St. Albans, WV) finished second and third for Clemson in the pole vault. Lewis cleared 4.88m (16′), while Kessler cleared 4.72m (15’6″).

In the long jump, Kai Maull finished second, and George Kitchens was third with marks of 7.15m (23’5 1/2″) and 7.13m (23’4 3/4″), respectively.

Among collegiate competitors, Terrance McDaniel finished first in the triple jump, and sophomore Brit Barrow (Marietta, GA) was second. McDaniel recorded a mark of 14.24m (46’8 3/4″), and Barrow posted a mark of 13.94m (45’9″).

In the weight throw, Clemson claimed second and third place, as junior Brett Varner (Hixson, TN) recorded a mark of 16.20m (53’1 3/4″) to finish as the runner up. Red-shirt freshman Colt Hodge (Spartanburg, SC) was third with a mark of 15.40m (50’6 1/4″).

Clemson men’s track and field will return to action on Jan. 18-19, 2002, as the Tigers travel to Virginia to compete at the Virginia Tech Invitational in Blacksburg.
