Three Tennis Players Earn Preseason ITA Rankings, Earn Invites to All-American

CLEMSON, S.C. – Three Clemson women’s tennis players were ranked in the preseason Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll announced Monday.

Senior Romy Koelzer is the highest ranked Tiger in singles at No. 23, the highest ranking of her career. Senior Beatrice Gumulya is ranked No. 62 and junior Tristen Dewar is No. 95.

All three players earned spots in the 2014 Riviera/ITA All-American Championships at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif., beginning Saturday, Sept. 28. Koelzer and Gumulya earned a spot in the Qualifying Singles Tournament, while Dewar earned a spot in the Prequalifying Singles Tournament. Junior Jessy Rompies was selected as the 26th alternate for the Prequalifying Singles Tournament.

The All-American is regarded as one of collegiate tennis’ “Grand Slam” events, and features the top players nationally. Koelzer was also selected as the sixth alternate to the Main Draw portion of the tournament.

The doubles team of Gumulya and Rompies is ranked as the number eight duo nationally, while Koelzer and Dewar come in at No. 45. The duo of Gumulya and Rompies, who went 11-3 as a team in 2013-14, earned a Main Draw spot and Koelzer and Dewar, who finished 10-4 last season, were selected for the Prequalifying Doubles Tournament. Last season, Rompies tallied 32 wins in doubles, moving her into the top 10 in school history in doubles wins in a season.

As a team, Clemson went 22-7 last season, tied for a share of the ACC Regular Season Championship with a 12-2 record and made it to the round of 16 at the NCAA Tournament.
