Clemson, SC — Clemson juniors Sam Saunders, Ben Martin and Kyle Stanley all finished in the top 21 of the Players Amateur at Belfair Golf Club in Bluffton, SC on Sunday. The event is one the top national amateur tournaments in the country.
Saunders had a strong weekend with consecutive rounds of 66 on Saturday and Sunday to finish the event at nine under par 271, good enough for eighth place. Saunders had rounds of 72-67-66-66 on the par 70 course.
Ben Martin finished in a tie for 17th with a six under par score of 274 for the four rounds. He had rounds of 68-71-65-70. His third round 65 tied for fourth best in the field of 83 golfers that day.
Kyle Stanley, who had finished third in this event each of the last two years, finished 21st with a 275 score. Stanley had rounds of 66-71-69-69 for his five under par total.
Phillip Mollica, rising senior on the Clemson team, had a 292 score for the four days and finished 62nd. Clemson assistant coach Jordan Byrd had a 282 score for the four rounds and finished 47th. He had a two under par 68 on Sunday.
In other action over the week, Clemson freshman McCuen Elmore reached the match play portion of the Carolinas Match Play Championship with rounds of 68-74. He was 17th in the stroke play competition, but he lost his first round in match play against David Neveu of Pinehurst, NC, 1 up.
