TEXAS WINS OVER CLEMSON 1-0 IN WOMEN’S SOCCER

CLEMSON, SC-Nikki Thaden scored the game’s only goal as seventh-ranked Texas defeated Clemson 1-0 in the second match of the Clemson Women’s Soccer Invitational at Clemson, SC Friday night.

With the win, Texas improves to 2-1 on the year, while the Lady Tigers fall to 2-1 this season.

Clemson is ranked 19th by Soccer America and 20th by the NSCAA poll. Texas is ranked seventh by Soccer America and 21st by the NSCAA.

Texas scored first at the 62:41 mark as Nikki Thaden scored her second goal of the season. Thaden sent a shot from 18 yards out to give the Longhorns a 1-0 advantage. Kelly Wilson sent a ball from midfield to Thaden. Thaden with her back to the goal, spun and sent a half-volley into the left corner of the goal.

Clemson will play Alabama-Birmingham at 3:30 p.m. and Furman will play Texas on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. in the second and final day of the tournament.

“I was not happy with the final result, but I was happy in the way we played,” said Clemson Head Coach Todd Bramble. “We defended well and I am happy in the way we kept our composure. They beat us with a great goal. Sarah Turner, Jenny Anderson and Britten Meyer all played great defensively. I think our freshmen grew up a great deal tonight. Amanda Garcia, Kelly Schneider, Courtney Foster, are freshmen who continue to look good up front.”
