Standifer Steps Away from Basketball

Via social media, Clemson guard Sydney Standifer announced her intention to step away from her playing career.

“Sydney is still a big part of Team 48, but unfortunately, she had to make the tough decision to medically retire,” said Clemson head coach Amanda Butler. “We always want to be sensitive to a student-athlete’s long-term health and Sydney’s knees just wouldn’t let her continue. We are excited to see how she can contribute off the court to the future of the Clemson program.”

The full text of Standifer’s announcement is included below.

I didn’t think it was possible for the sport I loved more than anything to cause this much heartbreak. Unfortunately, my knees gave up on me sooner than my heart did. With that being said, I have decided to medically retire for my future health.

In the big picture of life, basketball is so small, but to me, it was my whole world. I never thought I would be saying goodbye, especially this soon.

I love you, basketball, more than anything and always will. You gave me the best friends I will ever have and brought me happiness I didn’t know existed. You taught me life lessons and made me into the strong courageous woman I am today.

To my teammates, friends, and supporters, never take anything you do for granted. Give your absolute all in everything you do in life, and remember to thank God for the good, but most importantly remember to thank Him for all the rough times too. He is teaching you great lessons and preparing you for something great.

I will forever be grateful for Clemson, and the love and support they have always given me. Although, this is one of the most painful decisions I had to make I know God is guiding me to a new role in this life and in basketball. I will continue to be open and accepting of the new way of life He will soon teach me. Thank you, Clemson, for giving me this chance and believing in me.

Lastly, I want to say Sydney I love you. I am proud of you and how long you fought through the pain. You accomplished many of your goals along the way. You are strong, and you’re going to do amazing things in this life.

Forever a Tiger.

25 out.
