GREENSBORO, N.C. – Clemson sophomore forward Mariana Speckmaier was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Co-Offensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday.
The Miami, Fla. native scored the golden goal for Clemson in its 1-0 double overtime upset over No.4 Virginia on Thursday. Her goal in the 105th minute was just the fourth the Cavaliers allowed this season. Speckmaier went one-on-one with a Cavalier defender near the end line, making a move that was deflected out of bounds, setting up a Clemson corner kick. Sam Staab took the corner and sent the ball into the box and finding the head of Speckmaier, who redirected the ball right into the back of the net for the win.
For the season, Speckmaier ranks tied for second in the ACC in game winning goals (3), tied third in goals (6) and tied fifth in points (13).
Up next, the Tigers host Boston College (10-0-0, 2-0-0 ACC) Sunday, Sept. 30. Sunday’s matchup against the Eagles is set for 1 p.m., and will stream on ACCN Extra.
