Solid Orange Squad Members Visit Two Elementary Schools January 27-29

Feb. 1, 2010

On Wednesday, January 27, five Tiger student-athletes traveled to Mt. Lebanon Elementary School to promote literacy. Each athlete visited a fifth grade classroom and read a selected book to the students. Afterwards, the athlete and students discussed the importance of literacy and answered questions about college. Student-athletes who visited Mt. Lebanon include Caitlin O’Neill (rowing), Lydia Hassell (rowing), Ashley Good (track and field), Stephanie Fura (swimming and diving) and Michelle Nance (rowing).

Mairi Trimboli, a member of the rowing team, returned to Homeland Park Elementary School on Friday, January 29 to continue the Be a T.I.G.E.R.! Book Club discussion. Trimboli and the students all read through Chapter 28 in Jerry Spinelli’s Crash and met to discuss the themes and messages of the novel. The theme of bullying was discussed heavily and the students related their personal experiences with the book. The students will reconvene in March when they complete the book.
