Clemson, SC – Clemson sophomore Sam Saunders fired a second round 66 in Orlando, FL and qualified for the 2007 United States Amateur on Tuesday. Saunders finished the 36 hole qualifier with a score of 137, second in the field at the Golden Bear Club @ Keenes Pointe in Orlando, FL.
Saunders had rounds of 71-66 over the two days, one shot below the 136 turned in by medallist Andres Echavarria of Colombia. Saunders second round 66 on Tuesday was second in the field behind the 65 turned in by Echavarria.
Saunders is the fourth current Clemson golfer to qualify for the United States Amateur. Last month teammates Kyle Stanley, Tanner Ervin and Phillip Mollica all qualified for the event, which will be played August 20-26 at the Olympic Club in San Francisco, CA. A total of 312 amateur golfers from around the world will play two days of stroke play on August 20 and 21. The top 64 qualifiers from the stroke play will then begin match play on the 22nd.
