Pohl a Candidate for Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award

Feb. 23, 2012

Clemson, SC –

Senior utility player Phil Pohl (Cooperstown, NY) was announced as one of 30 candidates for the 2012 Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award for baseball on Thursday. A national media committee will narrow the list to 10 finalists midway through the regular season.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as a senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character, and competition.

Pohl, a two-time team co-captain, is 4-for-10 (.400) with a homer, double, and four RBIs on the young 2012 season. As a junior in 2011, he was a Second-Team All-ACC selection after hitting .333 with 43 runs, a team-high 22 doubles, four homers, and 33 RBIs in 60 games. He also was the winner of the 2011 Dedication Award for outstanding work in the strength training room and the co-winner of the 2011 Tiger Baseball Award, given to the team’s best leader. In 2010, he was honored during the College World Series Opening Ceremonies for having Clemson’s top GPA as well.

In the classroom, the management major has a 3.67 career GPA. He was a third-team Academic All-American by CoSIDA in 2011, becoming Clemson’s first Academic All-American since 1995 (Paul Galloway), and was a first-team Academic All-District III pick. He is also a three-time member of the ACC Academic Honor Roll and a two-time All-ACC Academic selection. Pohl is slated to received his degree in May.

Pohl is one of three candidates from the ACC, joining Peter O’Brien (Miami (FL)) and James Ramsey (Florida State). The complete list of candidates can be found on the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award website (SeniorClassAward.com).
