Onyewu Named National Player of the Week

Clemson, SC – After scoring the game-tying and game-winning goals against Alabama-Birmingham on Sunday in the NCAA Tournament Round of 16, Clemson sophomore Oguchi Onyewu has been chosen as the National Player of the Week by College Soccer News.

With just over a minute left in the match with UAB, Onyewu scored on a header to tie the game at 2-2 and sent it in to overtime. Onyewu got the game winner at the 106 minute mark in the second overtime period to give the Tigers the win. Despite being a defender, the sophomore from Olney, Maryland now has seven goals and five assists for 19 points this season and Sunday’s overtime goal was his third game-winning goal of the season.

Onyewu is also a finalist for The Missouri Athletic Club’s National Player of the Year award which will be handed out on January 11 in Saint Louis. The Tigers will next be in action on Sunday afternoon against No. 4 seed Indiana in Bloomington, IN with the winner advancing to the Final Four in Columbus, OH.
